Event Season: Tips for Scheduling Treatments

Scheduling Beauty TreatmentsNow that spring is here, event season is about to kick into high gear. You might have a wedding or two to attend this summer (or maybe you’re getting married yourself). You might have a graduation to go to, or you may have a milestone class reunion coming up. No matter what big life event is on the calendar in the upcoming months, you probably want to look great for it.

If you’re considering any type of anti-aging or beautifying treatment in advance of the big day (or night), timing is important. You don’t want to wait until the last minute to schedule your appointment, nor do you want to book things too far in advance. No matter what treatment you’re thinking about, here are a few tips to get the timing just right.

Fillers

Whether you’re thinking about a filler to ease the look of certain lines or wrinkles on your face, such as the lines that form between your nose and mouth, or to restore volume to your cheeks or lips, you want to give yourself time to heal after the treatment and time to correct it if you just aren’t happy with it. One common side effect after a filler injection, whether the filler is Juvederm, Radiesse, or something else, is bruising.

Since you probably don’t want to show up to your 20-year high school reunion looking as though you’ve been knocked in the face, it’s a good idea to schedule your injection no later than a few weeks before your big event. Doing so will give any bruising that might occur adequate time to fade away. The same is true of any swelling or redness that can occur after an injection.

The type of injection you choose might also be important. Some injections, namely those made from hyaluronic acid, such as Juvederm, Perlane, and Restylane, can be undone or reversed by injecting hyaluronidase, which dissolves the hyaluronic acid. If you’ve never had a filler injected before, you might want to stick with a hyaluronic acid, just in case you don’t like your results. Another option is to plan far in advance and give a filler like Radiesse a try. If you like it, but it’s worn off by the time of your big event, you can give it another try and have a general idea of what to expect.

Botox or Dysport

Not all lines and wrinkles are created equally. While some can be treated with fillers, others, namely those that develop as a result of repeated muscle movements over the years,  need another type of injection, such as Botox or Dysport. Timing is important when it comes to Botox or Dysport injections, too.

While most fillers provide instant results, it can take as long as two weeks for you to see the results after Botox or Dysport. Many people see results after just a few days, though. That means that if you are having Botox for your wedding, you’ll want to allow at least two weeks between the injection and the big day. Giving yourself two weeks not only means you’ll be more likely to actually see the results in time for the event, it also means that any side effects, from redness to swelling, will have plenty of time to fade away.

Laser Skin Resurfacing

How much time you need between a laser skin resurfacing treatment and a big event depends on the type of laser treatment you decide on. The deeper and more ablative the laser, the longer you’ll need for recovery. It can take as long as four weeks to recover from a very deep treatment with a carbon dioxidelaser, for example. But you might only need about a week to bounce back after a treatment with Fraxel, which only causes limited damage to the skin and is generally less aggressive.

No matter the type of laser you decide to try, it’s usually a good idea not to wait until right before your special event to schedule it. You want your skin to be completely fresh looking and healed from the treatment. Since a laser skin treatment can provide results that last for several months, try booking your appointment about two or three months before a big day.
