In a world where reality television often tops Nielsen ratings, it’s probably not surprising to hear of a new plastic surgery reality show that will focus on revision plastic surgery. The goal of this show is to take everyday men and women who underwent botched plastic surgeries and help them regain confidence through revision surgeries.
The producers sought participants in the spring and summer of 2013 and are lining up talented plastic surgeons to help these people get the outcome they expected. The good news about this reality show is that the goal is to educate the public on how to choose a plastic surgeon who will not botch the job.
Choosing the Best Doctor for Your Facial Plastic Surgery
With thousands of doctors offering facial plastic surgery, it can be hard to tell who the best choice is. Start your search by checking a doctor’s credentials, including board certifications and society memberships. Members of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons must have at least six years of surgical experience and training, and a minimum three of those years must be in plastic surgery. ASPS surgeons only operate in accredited medical facilities. Plus, they also keep up to date with techniques for patient safety and continuing education requirements. Members of the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery have similar requirements but their members specialize in the face.
Don’t look for the cheapest price. Plastic surgeons who offer huge discounts may not be as qualified as they make themselves out to be. There have been numerous cases where someone lacking experience injected a patient with fillers only to have the substance end up in the blood stream and cause a pulmonary embolism. In 2012, a 31-year-old woman from New York died after traveling to the Dominican Republic for a tummy tuck and liposuction that cost half what she was quoted in New York.
Read online reviews, but don’t take them all to heart. Despite being unethical, sometimes family members or friends of a plastic surgeon will create false, negative reviews of a competitor to lure business away. Look for online reviews that are screened to ensure the reviewer was actually a patient.
Finally, take time to peruse the before and after pictures on a plastic surgeon’s website. Ask if it is possible to meet the other patient, ask questions, and see the actual results up close.
Do Your Part to Avoid Complications
Avoid plastic surgery complications by listening carefully to your doctor’s orders. Some surgery results come out different than expected because the patient kept smoking took herbs that made it harder for the body to heal, or got back to a normal routine before the doctor gave permission.
