Ultherapy

It seems that there’s no end to the inventiveness of scientists in finding new ways to help us combat the effects of aging on our faces. Sagging skin, deepening lines, relaxed muscles and overexposure to UV radiation (yes, from sun-bathing!) all contribute to aging skin, and most, if not all, have their remedies.

Best of all, many of those remedies are non-surgical. There’s IPL which uses light, and Thermage which uses heat, and various kinds of abrasion and microdermabrasion techniques as well as skin peels and chemical treatments.

Now, there’s a fairly new one – Ultherapy, which uses ultrasound.

Ultherapy has received FDA approval, as did Thermage before it, and both aim to treat more or less the same problem: sagging skin and wrinkles. They both claim to be able to turn back the hands of time, and have been freely compared. It turns out that Thermage is more of an anti-aging preventative measure, while Ultherapy is something that can be applied after the fact to repair problems.

Both have been developed to reduce the signs of aging, without recourse to fillers, Botox, or other treatments. Both can be used in tandem with other treatments such as IPL (intense pulsed light) photorejuvenation or skin peels.

In fact, where Thermage and Ultherapy target areas beneath the skin, often the patient will also benefit from several treatments of the skin surface itself to remove anything from fine lines and spider veins to scarring.

After all, it’s one thing to turn back the clock a little, but it’s also worthwhile to rejuvenate the skin at the same time!

In fact, the RealSelf.com web site’s James Chan, MD points out that since these non-invasive procedures target areas under the skin – the same ones that are targeted by surgical procedures – combining them with treatments such as Fraxel will produce great results.

Where there is a little confusion over these treatments is that Fraxel also tightens the skin, but doesn’t treat anything beneath the surface, which is where non-invasive surgical procedures using heat or, now, sound, comes into play.

All of these options can be discussed with an experienced and qualified plastic surgeon, and the right mix found for you. Every patient is unique, everyone has their own specific areas that they would like to see addressed, and everyone’s skin is subtly different.

It may take several treatments, you may see an immediately satisfying result, or it may be a few days before anything changes visibly.

Many people turn to non-invasive procedures before they consider surgery, and through early and repeated sessions, coupled with great skin care, surgery may be postponed or even avoided completely.
