Breast Augmentation 101 in Chevy Chase, MDIf you are considering breast augmentation surgery, there have never been more choices of implants than there are now. There are currently THREE distinct types of implants available in the United States for breast enhancement. I will briefly review the types, so you are equipped with your choice of implant to discuss further during your consultation with Dr. Erica Anderson.

1. Saline-filled breast implants are composed of a silicone outer shell that is filled with a sterile salt water (saline) solution at the time of placement. They come in different sizes and either have smooth or textured outer surface. Saline-filled implants can be placed through the smallest incision as they are filled once they are in place.

2. Structured saline-filled breast implants are composed of a silicone outer shell that is filled with sterile salt water (saline), but contains an internal structure, so they behave as if filled with soft elastic silicone gel. These implants are the newest to be approved by the FDA and have been available since 2015. They can be placed through a similarly small incision but feel softer than traditional saline-filled implants.

3. Silicone gel-filled breast implants are composed of a silicone outer shell that is pre-filled with a cohesive gel. These are commonly referred to as “gummy bear” implants as the interior gel is more solid than previous generations of implants. These implants are available in round or anatomical (tear drop) shape of various sizes with either a smooth or textured exterior surface. These implants require the longest incision of the 3 types as they are prefilled with silicone. However, they feel the most natural.

In summary, you now have three distinct implant types available for breast augmentation. There are positives and negatives to each type of implant and your choice will be determined by your aesthetic goals, your body type and further discussion with Dr. Erica Anderson.
