cosmetic surgeryPlastic surgery can take a few years off of your appearance or help you feel better about your overall looks.

When making the decision to undergo surgery or any cosmetic procedure, whether a facelift or something less invasive, such as Botox, it’s important to make sure you want the surgery for the right reasons.

Having realistic expectations and wanting the surgery for yourself are key to having results you’re happy with.

Right Reason: You Want to Look Better

When it comes down to it, the only person you should be aiming to please with your surgery is you. Many people decide to finally get a procedure to change an aspect of themselves that has bothered them for a long time. You might decide to get rhinoplasty, for example, if you’ve always felt insecure about the size of your nose. You might decide to get an eyelid lift if you feel self-conscious about droopy, puffy, or tired-looking eyes.

Wrong Reason: Someone Else Wants You to Look Better

It’s important to remember that it is your body and that the only person who can make the choice to change it is you. Some feel pressure from others to undergo surgery, which can be disheartening in the end. While you  might be happy with the results or feel that you look younger after the procedure, it’s more likely that the happy feeling won’t last if your only reason for getting the surgery was to please someone else.

If you feel pressure from someone to get plastic surgery, whether it’s a family member or a spouse or partner, you might want to re-evaluate your relationship with that person. It can be tough to do, but if you’re feeling constant pressure from someone to change key aspects about yourself or to improve yourself to make them happy, you  might be better off without that person in your life.

Wrong Reason: To Get Revenge

Not surprisingly, some people decide to get plastic surgery to get revenge on another person. The thinking might be that they will have surgery to improve their appearance and the other person, usually a partner or spouse who left the person, will feel jealous or decide that they want to get back together.

It’s never a good idea to decide to undergo surgery to make another person jealous or to try to show that person what they’re missing. If you do end up getting back with the person, you might find yourself wondering if he or she likes you for who you and not just because of your new physical appearance.

Right Reason: You Feel Secure and Confident in Who You Are

You might decide to get surgery or have injections to celebrate who you are or to slightly enhance who you are. For example, you might choose to give yourself a dermal filler or Botox on your 40th or 50th birthday. You’ve lived for 40 or 50 fabulous years and want to celebrate that by giving yourself a slightly more refreshed and youthful appearance.

Have a Check-In

Consulting with a plastic surgeon before any procedure, invasive or not, is always recommended. Your surgeon can discuss your reasons for wanting the surgery with you and help you analyze and assess whether you are doing it for the right reasons. Your consultation will also give you an idea of whether or not what you’re hoping to have happen after the surgery or injection is realistic.

Keep in mind that a surgeon might not be willing to treat you if your reasons for wanting the surgery aren’t healthy or could possibly lead to trouble. Be honest with your doctor during the consultation, so that you’re both on the same page. Being upfront with a surgeon will allow her to give you the best possible care and treatment.

Plastic surgery might change the way you look on the outside, but it can also change the way you feel inside. Dr. JessicaKulak at the Naderi Center in Virginia and Maryland will discuss your reasons for wanting surgery and happily help you ultimately decide which procedure, if any, is right for you. Schedule an appointment with Dr. Kulak by calling the Virginia office at (703) 481-0002 or the Maryland office at (301) 222-2020.
