The Procedure
The goals for surgery often differ between male and female patients, but the basics of the surgery are generally the same. Incisions will be made entirely inside of the nose (closed rhinoplasty) or an additional small incision may be made on the underside of the nose between the nostrils (open rhinoplasty). Working through the incision, portions of the underlying bone, cartilage and tissue may be removed or altered in order to achieve the desired look. Additional material may be added to the nose in cases where the nose needs to be augmented. Minor differences according to gender may occur at this point. With the male nose job, for instance, changes are often made to achieve a stronger, more masculine look and techniques often need to be adjusted to address a male’s thicker skin and stronger cartilage and bone.
Once the desired changes are achieved, the skin will then be placed back over the nose and incisions will be closed. A splint will then be placed over the nose to support it as it heals to its new form. Every person who considers getting rhinoplasty obviously wants the best nose job surgeon considering there are always risks to any surgical procedure. While doing your research, whether it is about the procedure or about what each surgeon offers, always be sure to recognize two things about your surgeon: board certification and what category of plastic surgery they specialize in.
The Male Nose Job
Historically, plastic surgery has been sought far more frequently by women than men. In recent years, however, more and more men having been opting for plastic surgery, and rhinoplasty in particular. Male and female faces, and noses, are different in many ways. In general, men tend to have and desire a stronger, more angular, more masculine appearance, while women tend to appear softer. When it comes to the nose, the male nose is typically more prominent with a straighter bridge, greater width in the middle of the nose, and a less rotated tip. The skin overlaying the nose is often thicker which can affect the degree of refinement that can be achieved as well as the healing process. A qualified surgeon will carefully consider these differences when performing male rhinoplasty.
The Female Nose Job
Female noses differ from male noses in several ways. In general, the tip of the female nose is often more rotated than in men and the bridge is often lower. Women tend to seek more narrow, less prominent noses that appear softer and rounder. And while some men may wish to leave behind a bit of a dorsal hump, women usually do not. Of course, some women, particularly those who are taller or with longer faces, may seek more of a masculine appearance. It is important for a surgeon to consider the individual patient and customize the nose job to their features and their desires.
Rhinoplasty Risks
Just like any surgical procedure there are potential rhinoplasty risks to be aware of. Rhinoplasty is one of the most common procedures today but also one of the most technically challenging. Even with the best, most skilled surgeon, there is no predicting the way the overlapping skin will heal, the amount of scarring that may occur, or actually predicting the overall appearance. Computer imaging can help bring a vision as to how the nose may appear after the surgery, but the surgeon will advise you of potential risks that could occur. Carefully following your surgeon’s pre- and postoperative advice will help to ensure a positive outcome.
