Cosmetic ProceduresIn 2010, many people speculated that Christie Brinkley might have had a facelift. In a recent interview, Ms. Brinkley revealed that she’s never had cosmetic surgery and, though she used to say “absolutely not”, now that she’s reached her 60th birthday she no longer feels that way. She admitted that she’s tried Botox and that she would “never say never” to surgical procedures.

Christie Brinkley is not the only woman to hit 60 and feel it’s time to consider the benefits to cosmetic procedures. If you’re among the growing number of women who wants to fight the signs of aging, there are a number of surgical and non-surgical procedures that reduce wrinkles, sun and age spots, and loose skin.

Popular Cosmetic Surgical Procedures for Women Over 60

Facelifts and blepharoplasty were the top surgical procedures for people in their 60s, per American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery’s 2012 report. Each of these facial plastic surgeries lifts sagging skin and reduces the appearance of some creases, lines, and wrinkles.

A facelift involves incisions made from the hairline near the temple, around the front of the ear, and then around to the back of the ear. The skin is lifted, muscle and tissue are adjusted and skin is draped over the new form. At this point, excess skin is trimmed, and the incisions are sutured. This helps tighten loose skin on the lower face and some of the neck. For women over 60, the facelift is the best procedure for eliminating jowls and the “turkey gobbler” neck that appears as skin laxity decreases.

Performed on one or both eyelids, blepharoplasty is a helpful surgery if your goal is to reduce sagging skin on your upper eyelid or take care of bags under the eyes. The surgical procedure has the power to make you appear more alert and refreshed, not to mention younger. Dark circles or tear trough hollows can also be addressed with this surgery. Incisions are easily hidden in the crease of the upper eyelid, inside the lower eyelid, below the lower eyelashes, or in the crow’s feet area.

Popular Non-Surgical Procedures for Women Over 60

For the 60 and older crowd, dermal fillers were the most popular non-surgical cosmetic procedure. Chemical peels followed close behind. These non-surgical procedures help with a number of issues, including age spots, hollows, and wrinkles.

Dermal fillers cover a range of substances that are injected into the tissue to help replenish lost volume. As a result, hollows and wrinkles caused by diminishing fat stores fill out and make the skin look younger. Hyaluronic acid fillers (Juvederm or Restylane) can last anywhere from six months to a year, depending on where the injections were given. Radiesse, a calcium hydroxylapatite filler, lasts a year or more.

Chemical peels range from mild peels to deep peels. Deep peels do require anesthesia and may be performed in a hospital setting, though the actual process does not differ from a mild peel. With all chemical peels, a solution is applied to the facial skin. The chemical then targets the upper layers of skin and causes them to peel or flake off. The underlying skin layers look fresher and more radiant with fewer age spots, blemishes, and wrinkles.

Make sure you also consider the cost of any surgical or non-surgical procedure before you schedule an appointment. The Naderi Center for Rhinoplasty and Cosmetic Surgery provides a detailed list of cosmetic surgery fees for interested patients. When you’re ready to further discuss these procedures with Dr. Jessica Kulak, a board certified facial plastic surgeon, call her office at (301) 222-2020 in Maryland or (703) 481-0002 in Virginia.
