Skincare RulesSome people just have great skin. That begs the question, were they born with it or are they doing something to make sure their skin continues to look fantastic? Odds are likely that the women you see who don’t seem to have large pores, wrinkles, or other skin issues, are doing what they can to make sure their skin keeps looking good, no matter their age. If you’ve dealt with skin issues in the past or just want to know what you can do to improve your skin’s health and appearance, it might be time to set some rules for your skin.

Remember to Hydrate

While it might be a myth that you need to drink eight 8-ounce glasses of water every day, what’s not a myth is that you do need to make sure you’re properly hydrating. As you sleep, your body loses water, which is why so many people wake up with puffy eyes and with skin that looks dull. Help yourself hydrate by keeping a glass  of water by your bed, so that you can drink it when you wake up first thing in the  morning.

Some fillers, such as Juvederm, are made from a naturally occurring substance, hyaluronic acid, that helps add hydration and volume to your skin. If you’re facing age-related volume loss or lines and creases on your face, treatment with hyaluronic acid fillers can help restore plumpness and a youthful look to your skin.

Moisturize Wisely

Keeping your skin well moisturized is another part of hydrating properly. There are actually a few rules of thumb to follow when it comes to moisturizing. One is to remember to apply moisturizing products in the right order. Put the product that contains the most active ingredients in it on first. That means apply a serum, then your lotion or moisturizer.

If your skin is really dry, you might find that a multi-layer moisturizing approach works best. One option is to apply a lightweight oil on your skin, the top that off with a cream-based moisturizer.

There’s some debate about whether it’s worth it to moisturize at night or not. Some would say no, as your moisturizer will just end up all over your pillow as you sleep. But, if you have very dry skin, skipping that nighttime moisturizer can make your skin even drier.

Cleanse with Care

Cleansing your skin does more than just remove the day’s dirt and makeup. It can also improve the efficiency of the products you use. When you wash your skin and exfoliate, you’re sloughing off the dead skin cells and dirt that would otherwise stand in the way of the skincare products you use.

You  might want to explore the process of double cleansing. A two step process, it involves first removing your makeup with an oil-based cleanser. Next, you use your regular cleanser to wash away dirt and the debris of the day. Double cleansing doesn’t just make sure your skin is really clean. It can also improve the health of your skin. The massaging action involved in the cleansing helps increase blood flow to your face and can stimulate the production of collagen in the skin.

Eat Nutritious Foods

Although it’s pretty much a well established myth that eating junk food gives you pimples, what’s not a myth is that eating sugar can make wrinkles and signs of aging worse. When you eat a healthy diet, it tends to be reflected back in the way your skin looks. People who are sure to eat plenty of greens, fruits and other vegetables throughout the day tend to have clear, smooth and downright dewy skin. Focus on making sure you’re eating a high-fiber diet with plenty of sources of lean protein. While you don’t necessarily want to focus on one type of food over another, looking for foods that are high in antioxidants, such as berries, and that are packed with nutrients, but low in calories, such as spinach and kale, can be particularly  helpful.

Work with a Pro

Everyone’s skin is slightly different, which means it can be difficult to read one-size-fits-all advice articles and know that you’re really doing what’s best for your skin. That’s why it’s important to work with a professional, such as a facial plastic surgeon, who can make the best recommendations to you based on your specific skin type and other considerations.
