Before Lip InjectionsBeauty trends tend to come and go, but the demand for fuller lips has stayed for years now. Whether it’s thanks to attention from celebrities such as Kylie Jenner or just a desire for fuller, more youthful looking lips, plenty of women are turning to their facial plastic surgeons to find out more about their lip augmentation options. In 2015, search queries such as "what are lip fillers?" were among the most Googled beauty topics around the world. If you’re tired of being thin lipped or want to see what you’d look like with a bit more volume in the lip area, there are some things worth thinking about before you get injections.

No Two Lips Are Alike

Every person’s lips are slightly different in some ways. What you hope to get out of a lip injection treatment might not be what someone else is hoping to get from the same treatment. For example, you might be more concerned about the size of your lower lip and not your upper lip. If that’s the case, your surgeon might only inject the lower lip and leave the top lip alone.

Different people might also prefer different lip injection materials. Fillers made from hyaluronic acid tend to be the more popular lip fillers these days. But, there are differences among fillers made from the same ingredient. Some people prefer the results they get from Juvederm over the results they get from Restylane. For others, the opposite is true.

How Long They Last

Before you have lip injections, it helps to think about how long your results are likely to last. Typically, lip injections don’t last as long as other fillers. You might last for up to six months or your results might start to fade around four months. In some cases, size does matter. Thinner people typically metabolize the hyaluronic acid faster and might not get results that last for that long. How you handle your lips after the injection can also impact your results. If you’re constantly pursing your lips or putting pressure on them, you might see your results fade more quickly.

The Cost

The cost of lip injections can really influence how much you want them. The price of the injections can vary, based on the product used and how many syringes you need. It’s worth weighing the upfront cost of the treatment with the cost of other goals you might have and considering which is more important to you at the moment.

Keep in mind that you might be able to finance your lip augmentation, which can influence your decision. Think about the overall cost and how long it will take you to pay off the injections, versus how long they will last.

The Surgeon

The person you choose to perform the lip injections perhaps matters more than the product you choose. When performed by an untrained or inexperienced person or by someone who’s not a doctor, there’s a real risk for serious harm. You might not only end up with that awkward duck face look. You might also end up with permanent damage, for example, if the injector hits a blood vessel, or if the injector uses a substance that’s not safe for people, such as industrial silicone.

To reduce your risk for a poor outcome and to protect your health, make sure to vet your injector carefully. Pick someone who is a board certified facial plastic surgeon and who has demonstrable experience performing lip augmentation. You want to be able to review and look at the results previous patients have enjoyed before you make your decision.

Immediate Results Might Not Be What You’d Expect

Although there’s pretty much no downtime after lip injections and you’ll be able to return to work or school almost immediately, it’s important to remember that the way you look on the day of your injections won’t necessarily be how you’ll look in a week or so. Typically, the lips are fuller for the first few days after treatment. As the injectable settles and swelling decreases, your lips will settle into a more natural looking size. Your lips might also feel strange or very firm after the injection. After a few days, though, they’re start to feel soft and normal once again.
